Record Store Day 2021 is happening on July 17th, 2021 so we are sharing our favourite vinyl records this week to celebrate.

Jere’s Picks

What is special about vinyl records to you?

I’m a big fan of artwork, and vinyl records bring out more detail in the artwork than you would see in CDs and streaming. It also gives the chance for artists to really indulge in the creative side of the packaging and add new details that breathe more life into the album.

What is the most embarrassing record in your collection – that you bought yourself, not one you got as a gift.

It’s gotta be either Louder Now by Taking Back Sunday or Billy Talent II. I’m still an emo kid through and through lol.

What was your first cognitive record purchase?

You Fail Me by Converge. I started getting into them in my sophomore year of highschool after hearing All We Love We Leave Behind and Jane Doe. I bought it at Dr. Disc, a local record store in Windsor. It was way before I even had a record player. I just saw the artwork and was so enamoured I just had to buy it. When I finally got a player to listen to it I was blown away with how much life this album had.

Which record was the first one you got a serious connection to, which opened your interest for music, and which made it a livelihood, a lifestyle?

It’s gotta be White Pony by Deftones. I became a fan after seeing them open for Avenged Sevenfold in 2013, and soon after discovered this record. This was way before I was into shoegaze, so I favoured them for their heavier edge mixed with their dreamy experimental soundscapes intertwined. As I grew up and discovered shoegaze, I listened back to Deftones with a different perspective and found more to love within their sound.

Do you have any complete discographies?

Sadly, I don’t :(

How is your record collection organized? Alphabetical/genres/chaos.

Usually by genre. It’s easy right now because my taste in music consists of hardcore, metal, hip hop, and alternative.

The aliens are coming, and you can give them one album, what one?

The Real Thing by Faith No More.

Which audio format is your preferred ?

As much as like the convenience of streaming, vinyl will always be my go to. Especially with the kind of bands I listen to, I like to hear every single detail and get the sense of being in their world. It’s a lot more immersive.

Is there a record you get especially melancholy by, that reminds you of a certain period of your life?

Parting The Sea Between Brightness and Me by Touché Amoré. That album was my rock in a lot of the harder times in my life and really helped as a raw form of catharsis when I needed it most.

Which record did you buy last, and which one are you aiming for to be the next?

My last record purchase was a reissue of Slaughter Of The Soul by At The Gates. I’m looking to expand my collection with more shoegaze, hardcore, skramz, doom, and sludge metal. One album in particular is Internal Incarceration by Year Of The Knife. Their last record is one of the most savage and most brutal hardcore records I have ever heard, and with Kurt Ballou on production he elevates the band’s sound to be absolutely bone crushing.

Our debut album Tell Your Friends You Love Them comes out October 1st, 2021.
